I had always known the phrase, "Why me?", to be associated with misfortune. Whenever you hear someone say, "Why me?" it is usually because something bad has happened to the person.
Some time ago, I heard a man of God speak about the same phrase, "Why me", in a totally different way, and it got me thinking. I began to see this phrase in another light.
While I don't condemn anyone who asks this question in pain- I might have also asked it myself- I think that the only problem is that we don't usually balance the equation. What do I mean by that? I mean to say that we ask, "Why me?" when bad things happen, but we don't ask, "Why me?" when good things happen.
You see, good things happen to us every day, but we don't take time to reflect on them. We take good things as the norm, no big deal about them. We just take them for granted. We expect them to happen and when they do, we don't take notice of them. But if by chance, a bad thing happens, we ask, " Why me?".
I discovered something. If you ask "Why me?" of the negative and compare it with "Why me?" of the positive, you will discover that the positive has more questions than the negative. Let's see some instances.
Why am I still alive? Some of my age mates and even those younger than me have gone.
Why am I still healthy? There are so many disease-causing microorganisms in the atmosphere.
Why am I still healthy? There are so many people lying in the hospital for a long period of time but I'm not. I'm physically and mentally healthy.
Why am I the one who has a phone and data to browse the internet? Some so many people don't.
Why do I have food on my table? There are so many people dying of hunger.
Why are things working for me?
Why am I saved?
Why do I have a good family?
Why did I have the opportunity to go to school?
These are many more questions you need to ask yourself. As the man of God asserted, you may discover that there is more to you than just mere existence. You may discover that God has a special interest in you.
I know that God loves the world. I know that God loves everybody. I also know that God loves me. I know that He pays attention to me. This is an awesome thing to know. God pays attention to me. And I know that He pays attention to you. Even though He has billions of people on the earth to attend to, He pays attention to me. I see God in that light. I think you should too. I think you should personalize God in your life.
There is something about you that God desires. (Psalm 8: 4-6) There is something that interests God about you. He has made you His in Christ. You make Him yours.
Anything that is working in your life is because of God. Don't focus on what is not working. Shift your focus to what is working and be thankful for it. Don't feel entitled to a good life. It is by grace, not by works. Ponder on God's goodness, and maybe you will find reasons to ask, "Why me?". You will have many reasons to ask, "Why me?" in a joyful way in Jesus' name. Amen.
